Economy Leather and Footwear Sector: Positive Performance in 2024
The leather and footwear sector in Tunisia showed positive performance in 2024, with an export-to-import coverage rate of 163.9%, and export value reaching 2,182.1 million dinars. This vital sector has demonstrated strong results on international markets, continuing to grow despite challenges.
Italy remains the top destination for Tunisian footwear exports, with a value of 1,018 million dinars, followed by Germany, France, and Slovakia. Exports of other leather products are primarily directed to France, followed by Italy and Germany. These figures were published by the Centre for Export Promotion after the sixth sectoral meeting dedicated to the leather and footwear industry.
During this meeting, participants recommended focusing on digital marketing for the “Made in Tunisia” brand in preparation for international events in 2026. This strategy aims to strengthen Tunisia’s position on the global stage by leveraging digital tools to expand its reach in international markets.
The leather and footwear sector is a significant contributor to the Tunisian economy, employing approximately 28,700 workers. It consists of around 200 companies, 184 of which are fully exporting. The sector’s main activities include tanning, with 10 companies, footwear, with 135 companies, leather products, with 45 companies, and leather garments, with 10 companies.
The Centre for Export Promotion holds a series of sectoral meetings at its headquarters to boost Tunisia’s presence in global markets, with participation from professionals, representatives of the National Federation of Leather and Footwear, and the National Centre for Leather and Footwear. Representatives from the Tunisian Company for Foreign Trade Insurance and the banking sector also attended the meeting.
